Course Synopsis

Presenter: Raymond Choi, DDS

As the largest segment of our population ages, general dentists will need to meet the challenge of treating older, medically compromised patients. This course will cover practical implant and restorative strategies appropriate for older patients, including proper assessment and treatment planning. Attendees will participate in model-based, hands-on exercises to learn simplified implant protocols so that they leave the course with solid fundamentals for treating older patients more confidently. Additionally, the implant and restorative procedures taught in this course can easily be incorporated into any general practice for increased efficiency and profitability.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare surgical and restorative techniques for successful implant overdentures
  • Manage treatment of natural root-retained overdentures
  • Manage a minimally invasive mini-implant protocol for stabilization of removable prostheses
  • Adapt treatment to safely navigate surgeries for older, medically compromised patients
  • Manage pre- and post-op surgical treatments for older patients
  • Learn to evaluate anticoagulants, bisphosphonates and pain medications for surgery
  • Apply accurate denture protocols in fewer visits using traditional chairside techniques and digital technology
  • Apply treatment planning strategies for partially edentulous older patients
  • Develop a working knowledge of systemic disease and potential interactions

Dr. Raymond Choi

Raymond Choi, DDS

Dr. Raymond Choi received his DDS from the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC and has taught there for over 10 years as an assistant clinical professor. He is currently an adjunct clinical faculty member at Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine and a master’s candidate in geriatric dentistry at USC. Dr. Choi is also a fellow of the ICOI, an associate fellow of the AAID, and a graduate of the Misch International Implant Institute. As a general dentist who has been placing implants for over 20 years in his private practice in Tustin, California, he was one of the first dentists on the West Coast to place mini dental implants for loose-denture stabilization.
